About our Rabbi

Rabbi Dr. Reuven ('Bobby') Silverman has been the minister at Manchester Reform Synagogue for thirty years, since he arrived in September 1977. Prior to that he was at Edgware Reform Synagogue (1974-7) and the historic Mikve Israel-Emanuel, Dutch-Portuguese synagogue in Curacao Netherlands Antilles.  

He is a member of the British Assembly of Rabbis (of which he was Chairman 1990-93), and a member of the Rabbinical Assembly of America.

Rabbi Silverman's PhD in is the History of Jewish Philosophy, for which he wrote his doctoral thesis on "The Jewish Reception of Spinoza from the 17th -20th centuries". He is also the author of "Baruch Spinoza, Outcast Jew, Universal Sage" (Symposium Press, 1995), an analysis of Spinoza's contribution to philosophy, biblical criticism, psychology and political theory.
He lectured in Modern Hebrew Language and Literature at the Manchester Dept of Middle Eastern Studies between 1984 and 1996. He is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the  Manchester University Centre for Jewish Studies; his research interest is the contributions of Jews to psychology and psychotherapy (Guest Lecture on that subject Manchester University Centre for Jewish Studies in February 2000). Rabbi Silverman holds an Advanced Diploma in Counselling and is a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, with a small but regular counselling practice.
He has regularly taken part in radio broadcasting since 1996 on Jewish themes BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4.
